Composition
Beef Fat (40%)
Peter & Paul suet products contain as much as three times the fat levels of other top brands and it’s this high suet content that provide your garden birds with all the energy they need. That said, the more concentrated and higher quality the suet is, the better it is for the birds. The industry standard for fat used in suet production is Cat 3 tallow which is classified as; a blend of animal fat by-products, and as such could include Beef, lamb, Pig or anything! Peter & Paul suet products contains only beef fat, which not only means that these products do not change composition from batch, to batch, to batch, but it also happens to be a denser form of suet and, therefore, has the highest pay back in calories per gram. To put it simply; the more fat and the better that fat is that’s in suet – the more birds you will get in your garden.
Dried Mealworms (4%)
Many birds eat insects naturally, so feeding mealworms to the birds seems like a natural thing to do. Dried Mealworms quickly attract a variety of insect-loving wild birds to your garden such as robins and thrushes. They are also a rich source of protein and fat which can be fed all the year round but by feeding during the spring, you will be ensuring that parent birds are providing their young with all the goodness they need.
Spirulina (1%)
Spirulina has proven to be a FANTASTIC supplement, highly beneficial for our feathered friends. Spirulina is basically an edible blue-green micro algae that naturally grows in the lakes. It constitutes about 72% protein, astonishing 0.5% of beta-carotene and is the richest source of the B 12 vitamin. This ocean of nutrients has VERY interesting effects on birds. Spirulina makes their plumage glossier, it intensifies their natural colour, improves their health by increasing their metabolic rate, protecting their kidneys and improving their digestive tract flora, it has been shown to have anti-cancer and anti-viral effects and also increases their fertility many folds. Studies have shown that when the birds are fed Spirulina rich diets, they showed a great improvement in their fertility – up to 96%! Basically, it is wonderful!
Wheat Flour
In large quantities, wheat flour could and should be considered a filler and that is what a large percentage of our competitors use it for. But wheat flour, in smaller quantities, is used as a tallow binding agent – it stops the suet being less soggy and allows it to better mix with the dry ingredients. Peter & Paul suet products contain as little wheat flour as possibly – as little as the machines that produce Peter & Paul suet products will allow – and it has been augmented with peanut flour to enhance its nutritional value. Because of this you’ll also find that Peter & Paul suet products are of a softer consistency than others and this is due to the superior quality and volume of fat and suet we use.
Millet
Millet is packed full of protein, iron and vitamin b which is vital as young chicks grow, also popular with House Sparrows and If you’re lucky enough to have Tree Sparrows in your garden? They’ll love it!
Linseed
Linseed is a small brown flat seed that is rich in essential oils that is popular with a wide range of wild birds and relished by finches, but is also a good tonic seed helping wild birds keep warm during the cold winter months. Linseed is high in Omega 3 fatty acids that is both valuable and essential for birds when they are moulting to help maintain their feathers. Linseed is also high in protein, high dietary fibre, rich in B vitamins and trace elements such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorous, but also high in fat and energy too!
Rapeseed
Rapeseed is exceptionally high in oil and acts as a conditioner to strengthen the feathers of birds. Rapeseed has a sweet taste that birds love, so is popular with many wild birds including finches.
Our Unique natural seed coating is a digestible energy source which inhibits bacterial growth. This can help prevent birds from picking up common bugs including Salmonella and E.Coli.
Done and dusted
Birds have a very different breathing system than us mammals. The air flow only goes one way, so as they ‘breathe out’ new air automatically enters the lungs. This means that any dust in the air can cause discomfort or illness. Peter&Paul seeds are dust extracted before mixing and tested for dust during the mixing process. How dusty is your bird food?
