Composition
Wheat Flour
In large quantities, wheat flour could and should be considered a filler and that is what a large percentage of our competitors use it for. But wheat flour, in smaller quantities, is used as a tallow binding agent – it stops the suet being less soggy and allows it to better mix with the dry ingredients. Peter & Paul suet products contain as little wheat flour as possibly – as little as the machines that produce Peter & Paul suet products will allow – and it has been augmented with peanut flour to enhance its nutritional value. Because of this you’ll also find that Peter & Paul suet products are of a softer consistency than others and this is due to the superior quality and volume of fat and suet we use.
Beef Fat (18%)
Peter & Paul suet products contain as much as three times the fat levels of other top brands and it’s this high suet content that provide your garden birds with all the energy they need. That said, the more concentrated and higher quality the suet is, the better it is for the birds. The industry standard for fat used in suet production is Cat 3 tallow which is classified as; a blend of animal fat by-products, and as such could include Beef, lamb, Pig or anything! Peter & Paul suet products contains only beef fat, which not only means that these products do not change composition from batch, to batch, to batch, but it also happens to be a denser form of suet and, therefore, has the highest pay back in calories per gram. To put it simply; the more fat and the better that fat is that’s in suet – the more birds you will get in your garden.
Peanut Flour
Peanut granules offer a rich natural concentration of oil and protein, are a particular favourite with most garden birds and are added to help increase nutritional content of bird seed mixes. Peanut granules are safer for young birds and smaller species, unlike whole peanuts that can present a choking hazard. Peanut granules can be found in: Four Seasons, Clean Plate, Vivid Colour, In Full Song and Mealworm Mix.
Glucose
Glucose is used as a 100% natural binding agent, but also helps keep food products soft and fresh and acts as a natural preservative.
Sunflower Hearts
Sunflower Hearts are loved by more wild bird species than any other seed, they are probably the bird food which more species eat than any other. Sunflower Hearts provide garden birds with a rich source of oil, protein and energy, they are mess free and they are husk free. This means that less time is spent cracking the seed open, enabling birds to save valuable time and feed more efficiently. Sunflower Hearts can be found in: Four Seasons, Clean Plate, Vivid Colour, In Full Song and Mealworm Mix.
Millet
Millet is packed full of protein, iron and vitamin b which is vital as young chicks grow, also popular with House Sparrows and If you’re lucky enough to have Tree Sparrows in your garden? They’ll love it!
Dried Mealworms (4%)
Many birds eat insects naturally, so feeding mealworms to the birds seems like a natural thing to do. Dried Mealworms quickly attract a variety of insect-loving wild birds to your garden such as robins and thrushes. They are also a rich source of protein and fat which can be fed all the year round but by feeding during the spring, you will be ensuring that parent birds are providing their young with all the goodness they need.
Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens)
Peter & Paul Black Soldier Fly actually has a positive Calcium to Phosphorous ratio, which research has proven promotes increased animal health and will help prevent MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease). These properties also make them an excellent addition to the diet of growing hedgehogs. They can also be fed as a tasty treat to many small furry pets, such as Hamsters, Gerbils, Rats and Mice. Most fish will also enjoy Peter & Paul Black Soldier Fly larvae from cold water species, such as; Goldfish and Koi, to Tropical species, like; guppies, mollies, cichlids and catfish.
Spirulina (1%)
Spirulina has proven to be a FANTASTIC supplement, highly beneficial for our feathered friends. Spirulina is basically an edible blue-green micro algae that naturally grows in the lakes. It constitutes about 72% protein, astonishing 0.5% of beta-carotene and is the richest source of the B 12 vitamin. This ocean of nutrients has VERY interesting effects on birds. Spirulina makes their plumage glossier, it intensifies their natural colour, improves their health by increasing their metabolic rate, protecting their kidneys and improving their digestive tract flora, it has been shown to have anti-cancer and anti-viral effects and also increases their fertility many folds. Studies have shown that when the birds are fed Spirulina rich diets, they showed a great improvement in their fertility – up to 96%! Basically, it is wonderful!
Berry Colourant
Of course, there are some fussy garden birds out there and they demand a high level of attention when it comes to the bird food you put on their table! Peter & Paul suet products come in two flavours; Mealworm and Berry & Bug. Not only will this mean that you can try to find the flavour that will tickle your garden bird’s taste buds, it also makes them ideal for year-round feeding. The natural red berry colourant we use is added into our suet products as an attractant to birds at any time of the year but especially during the autumn and winter months.
Our Unique natural seed coating is a digestible energy source which inhibits bacterial growth. This can help prevent birds from picking up common bugs including Salmonella and E.Coli.
Done and dusted
Birds have a very different breathing system than us mammals. The air flow only goes one way, so as they ‘breathe out’ new air automatically enters the lungs. This means that any dust in the air can cause discomfort or illness. Peter&Paul seeds are dust extracted before mixing and tested for dust during the mixing process. How dusty is your bird food?
